Report: Report on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja

Period: December 24, 2022 to April 22, 2023

Reported By: Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE)

Date: April 22, 2023

The objective is to raise $50,000 to enable 200 widows and orphans in Abuja to have access to healthcare services through health insurance. We have raised so far $8, 115 from 83 Donors within a period of 2 years and 3 months (September 23, 2020 – December 23, 2022).

In the period reported from December 24, 2022, to April 22, 2023, WEWE received zero ($0) donations.

Previously, WEWE has provided health insurance for 45 widows and orphans – this is for both National Government Insurance and Private Healthcare Schemes with the help of the funds received in the period reported from WEWE GlobalGiving page.

From December 24, 2022, to April 22, 2023 (4 months), donations received from the previous donors were used to support additional 8 beneficiaries (4 widows and 4 orphans children) See the picture attachedwaiting to be enrolled into the scheme, making a total of 53 widows and orphans benefiting from the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) project.

Currently, a total of 53 beneficiaries (both widows and orphan children) are directly benefiting from the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP).

Monthly Review meeting with the widows:

Objective:

The objective of the meeting was to discuss and clarify the challenges faced by widows during registration of health insurance and at the point of accessing treatment in their different Healthcare Centers. See the picture attached.

Attendance: A total of 22 beneficiaries were in attendance [10 widows and 12 orphans children (4 males and 8 females)]

Date of the meeting: April 20, 2023

Venue: No 25 Idanre Hills Street, AMSSCO Platinum City Estate. Galadimawa Abuja.

Challenges in registering for the health insurance and accessing healthcare:

  1. The names of registered widows were not sent to their specified Healthcare Centers.
  2. Some of the widows were not able to identify the location of the Healthcare centre given to them.
  3. A far distance from the house of the widows from their healthcare center location.
  4. The healthcare service doesn’t cover some severe health issues such as bone dislocation in a child and there was a change in the hospital.
  5. Some of the widows are charged 10% of the total amount of drugs prescribed for them.
  6. It took 3 months to enroll widows on the government's national database.

Mitigation:

  1. WEWE will follow up to ensure that the names of registered widows are sent to their specified Healthcare Centers
  2. WEWE will follow up to enable the widows to locate the Healthcare center given to them
  3. WEWE will follow up to change/register widows to a closer healthcare center
  4. WEWE will provide support on some of the severe health issues not covered by health insurance.
  5. WEWE will reimburse the widows charged an additional 10% for drugs
  6. WEWE will follow up with the Government National Database office to facilitate faster registration for widows

Conclusion:

WEWE will continue to enrol more widows and orphan children to meet our target of 200 widows and orphan children in Abuja.

Thank you GlobalGiving for the platform given to Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE) to bring this service and more to widows and orphans children.

Yours in service of helping the Widows and Orphans.
