A better life for 1000 tribal children

We are currently in the process of launching a new project in collaboration with our Indian partner, Nirman, to support 1,000 tribal children across 10 villages around Satara, Maharashtra. These children come from families that have been stigmatized as "criminal tribes" under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 (CTA). This labeling has perpetuated widespread societal perceptions of criminality within these communities, resulting in severe social and economic marginalization.

The project aims to provide direct support to 1,000 children (60% girls and 40% boys) who are at risk of dropping out of school, not being retained, or becoming involved in child labor and child marriage. To achieve this, activity centers and support classes will be established where children can learn in a nurturing environment, develop friendships, and receive specialized life skills training. This support will help them complete age-appropriate education and increase their awareness of child rights and protection. The project also focuses on promoting girls’ education as a strategy to reduce the practice of child marriage.

Additionally, the families of these children need support to provide a stable background during their development. Family members from these tribes often work as laborers in roadside construction and agriculture and frequently lack essential citizenship documents, such as birth certificates, ration cards, caste certificates, and voter IDs. Women in these communities face triple discrimination based on caste, class, and gender, leading to multiple forms of oppression and violations of their economic, political, educational, social, and cultural rights.

To address these challenges, the project aims to train 100 members of community-based organizations on their constitutional rights. This training will empower them to help families obtain essential citizenship documents and access government entitlements.

The project is planned to start in January 2025.

With your generous support, we can help 1,000 children and their families build a better future, please give now.

Thank you very much!
