"We found that about 70-80 children in the age group of 3-18 years are not getting good nutrition. In the Pardhi community, where there is no good understanding of family planning, we easily see 4-5 children in a single family. The children in these families were dull, sick and malnourished. In this community, there is a lack of nutritious food required for the health and healthy growth of the children. The parents are also unaware of the importance of balanced nutrition and how it affects the health of the children. This has led to us seeing many children with health problems in these families. This not only affects physical health, but also mental health. The indirect impact on children's education is seen in the form of absentism, school refusal and ultimately dropping out of school. The children are deprived of their right to education and self-development.
In this situation, Nirman has started distributing essential commodities to 110 destitute families of the Pardhi community in Gotondi, Vyahli and Kathi villages in Indapur block of Pune district. These essential items included wheat, rice, sugar, tea powder, moong dal, tur dal, groundnuts, oil, turmeric, red chilli, salt, cumin, mustard, soap, washing powder and toothpaste. With this package, 200 children in the Indapur block could be supported.
Once the families are somewhat better off, they are also able to send the children to school again. Nirman works intensively for this and supports through family counselling and homework help."
