Burnley College's 2017 Trip to Thailand

By Kate Robey | The GVI Trust, Operations Manager

Dear Supporters,

After a rather quite 2016, we are kicking 2017 off on a high note. We are starting the year by offering partial scholarships to 11 students from Burnley College in East Lancashire. They will be traveling to Phang Nga, Thailand in February to take part in an International Education Experience.

Here is a bit of background

According to the 2010 Index of Multiple Deprivation, Burnley is ranked as the 11th most deprived local authority area. At £436, average weekly wages in Burnley are below the regional average of £470. 20% of the working age population are claiming an out of work benefit, compared with a Northwest average of 17%.

Burnley College

Burnley College Sixth Form Centre is a further education college. Rated Outstanding across all areas by Ofsted, our students go on to achieve great things. From places at top universities, to careers that enable students to pursue their interest.

Everyone who joins Burnley has ambitions, unique backgrounds and individual needs. The needs of each student shouldn’t stand in the way of their ambition, which we offer a whole host of support packaged to help students through the college experience, including travel, food, career guidance, and financial support.

We offer an Enrichment program to all students. Each student has the opportunity to join clubs and societies. They include Book Club, Chess Club, Debating Society, Charity Club, Football, Netball, Duke of Edinburgh, Student Magazine and Volunteering as well as a huge number of others.

We have 11 students from Burnley College coming to volunteer in Phang Nga, Thailand. The students have been through a vigorous application process to be part of the trip, completing an application form, being successful in a panel interview and formulating a Fundraising Committee.

They are very much dedicated to fundraising for the cost of the trip and have many ideas and events scheduled!

Today we would like to introduce you to a few of the scholars!

  • Claire (17 years old). She currently volunteers at a Children’s nursery and has experience of fundraising for Child Reach. Claire is studying Level 3 Child Care and looks forward to working within the community in Phang Nga. She has excellent communication skills and looks forward to engaging with the community. Claire is enthusiastic and works well under pressure, she has a willingness to learn and enjoys overcoming challenges given. Claire believes her commitment to the trip will ensure tasks given are completed with motivation and within the given deadline.
  • Lauren (17 years old). She is a volunteer with the Greater Manchester Police in Child Sexual Exploitation and is a Burnley College Ambassador. She has a lot of experience in volunteering and in fundraising and is aiming to join the RAF. Lauren is studying A levels and believes the trip offers her a chance in a lifetime enabling her to experience a different culture, learn new skills and help meet the needs of the community.
  • Eden (17 years old). She currently volunteers as part of a local youth group and has taken part in a number of fundraising events for this cause. Eden is studying Level 3 BTEC in Travel and Tourism. With the theory learned in the classroom, Eden hopes the trip will allow her experience and put into practice her new knowledge. The volunteering trip will give her a huge amount of experience needed when applying jobs within the travel sector.

In our next update, we will introduce you to the other 8 scholars!

Thank you for your donations, which helps make trips like this a reality.

With Gratitude,
The GVI Trust
