The months of the pandemic have represented a call to action that reminds us, today more than ever, of our purpose and what unites us as a team. Much work remains to be done but together we are getting closer to our mission: quality education for all children and young people in Panama.

Here's what we've accomplished in the last few months:

1. AT- DISTANCE EDUCATION

The 35 participants in the Educational Leadership Program continue to support the academic and socio-emotional development of their students through virtual platforms and different media. 1955 students are benefited through the work of program participants. More than 34% of our fellows contact their students through WhatsApp, followed by virtual plataforms (28%), printed modules (16.5%) and calls or SMS messages. The majority of our students are in junior high school, followed by primary students.

Prior to the start of the virtual school year, we help create the entire content for 7^th to 9^th grade TV and radio national education initiative called “Conectate a la Estrella.” Three of our fellows also taught on “Conectate a la Estrella.”

In 2020, Enseña por Panamá has trained over 1500 publics ystem teachers from all provinces and indigenous groups in Panama on topics such as student learning and teaching strategies, social emotional skills, virtual teaching tools among other pedagogical material from our educational leadership program. These initiatives have strengthened our relationship with the Ministry of Education, social sector organizations, teachers and young professionals. Our movement is cementing itself and becoming an important component of the educational scene. We hope to train more than 2500 teachers next year.

2. NEW ALLIANCES

Enseña por Panamá and UNICEF established a cooperation agreement to strengthen teaching-learning processes at the preschool and pre-school levels, in the current context caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.The project, which is developed in conjunction with the Ministry of National Education, has two components:

Preschool Program: Currently training 400 teachers and educational agents to strengthen and / or develop skills in initial education that contribute to the loving and sensitive care of boys and girls from 0 to 6 years old. Likewise, 48 audiovisual materials will be published focused on promoting correct practices to stimulate and develop learning in the home of children in early childhood.

Premedia Program: We will create a digital support network between pre-school teachers (7th, 8th and 9th grades) in the areas of Mathematics, Spanish and counseling (emotional skills), to exchange pedagogical experiences and receive continuous accompaniment. Additionally, printed and digital pedagogical materials will be published in the areas of Mathematics, Spanish and socio-emotional skills to share good teaching practices with teachers from all over the country.

Estrella Enseña One of our most important alliances is with the Ministry of Education of Panama, with whom we have worked on various initiatives to reinforce educational quality in the country. One of the initiatives that we have worked together is the virtual repository of educational material used in pre-media television classes, through the national initiative “Connect with the star". The repository continues to function through our website. This platform allows students, teachers, parents and guardians to download the materials they see on television to reinforce learning from home. Anyone can enter the repository through https://ensenaporpanama.com/estrella/ More than 290,000 downloads of the 240 materials available in the repository.

#DeProfesParaProfes is a series of video tutorials created by the Participants of the Educational Leadership Program. The initiative aims to share learnings and recommendations that can support teachers to use digital tools and develop their students' academic and social-emotional skills remotely. The videos are available to the general public and can be consulted through our social networks and YouTube channel, as well as through the educational portal of the Ministry of Education and the Panamanian Institute for Special Habilitation.

Virtual education outreach during COVID-19

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Enseña por Panama actively adapted to the new virtual context. At first we succesfyly created a virtual training program for all interested public shool teachers. Here are some of the results:

+ 500 teachers trained in the development of effective teaching guides focused on the development of the student's autonomy.
+ 120 hours free virtual training in pedagogy and collective leadership for teachers of the educational system.
+ 600 certified teachers through the virtual course "Teaching tools to innovate in the teaching role".
97% satisfaction with the pedagogical experience of the course.
We are currently working with the Educational Excellence Foundation and Unicef Panama to
train more than 400 teachers in pedagogy and social leadership.
12 weekly talks with partners and experts in education and leadership from all over Latin America. We had
+ 1150 people registered.

A month after, we decided to focus on premedia (7th to 9th grade) students who could only continue their education through TV and/or radio (over 70% of the student population) because of lack of acces to internet, electornic device or electricity.

The national initiative is called "La Estrella Enseña"
Initiative between the Ministry of Education and Teaches for Panama that has the objective of following up pre-school students who receive classes through the distance education strategy "Connect with the Star". The initiative includes the following lines of action:
• Repository of all pre-media class presentations screened on television so that students can consult them through the Teach for Panama website.
• Creation of additional content, readings, exercises, challenges for students to strengthen their learning.
• Creation of an Instagram account (@estrellaensena) to interact with students through exercises and digital activities.
+103,000 downloads of pedagogical materials.
164 pedagogical materials available in the repository. +1,700 followers on Instagram (@estrellaensena). +2,900 interactions on Instagram (@estrellaensena). 33,205 visits to the seventh grade page.
24,461 visits to the eighth grade page. 22,189 visits to the ninth grade page.

Fuerthermore we have created diverse guides and content that has helped teachers and parents to continue their student's education at home. We are extremely proud of our team and what we are achieving in such changing and difficult times. The current crisis has tested everyone but at the same time made un realize our full potential.

Education in the COVID era

Following the global situation with the health crisis and the security measures taken by the government, Enseña por Panamá set out to work with the Ministry of National Education, other NGO's and organizations in the educational sector to offer a series of training and materials of learning for teachers and students across the country, with the main objective of preparing the general educational community with the pedagogical tools that will allow them to face the current challenges and those that we will see when the school calendar restarts. In this sense, the Enseña por Panamá team opened 3 digital training opportunities for teachers:

Five virtual sessions to learn about the “Preparation of Teaching Guides”. The sessions were held the first week of April and 415 teachers from all over Panama participated in the meetings.

Virtual training (total of 40 hours).
More than 160 teachers actively participated in all 22 virtual sessions
(face-to-face) that
we made from April 20 to 1
May, through which
they learned to make an at-distance learning toolkit and develop their
planning skills
strategically their classes,
develop reading comprehension and
socio-emotional skills in their students, and developing their own collective leadership skills to improve their impact inside and outside the classroom.
A survey was designed and applied in the last session of the course. A total of 151 participants responded. 96% of the participants stated that they were satisfied with the pedagogical experience offered in the course.

Anonymous testimonial: “I liked all the topics of the training, since it was dynamic and active. It got us thinking about the things we do in the classroom, because sometimes our classes don't have a logical sequence and we are frustrated that our students don't quickly grasp what we are teaching. With this course I relearned that I must rethink all my activities. ”
On April 28, we opened registrations again and 300 teachers registered to participate in the second version of the training "Didactic tools to innovate in the teaching role", which will continue to be carried out through Microsoft Teams and will begin on Monday, May 11. Enseña por Panamá will open new registration dates for virtual training every fortnight, with the aim of supporting as many teachers as possible.
