"In their own voices; thankful for support"!
Our staff randomly spoke to a few of our trainees to hear about their training experiences; here, we bring you some of the transcribed messages in their own words.
Note; All real names are undisclosed for confidentiality purposes and to protect the identity and offer respect to the dignity of our clients who have experienced extremely painful war situations.
Ajoki
Ajoki is a formerly abducted child mother of three children who was abducted in 2005 at the age of thirteen years.
Ajoki says I am thankful to all the supporters of Terra Renaissance for supporting my children get to school together with their school feeding, the monthly food support, and the medical support.
Though my second marriage after return from captivity didn’t work, I am grateful that the training and support I am getting at Terra will empower me to be self-reliant and support my children by myself...Thank you, and may God bless you!
Owoli
Owoli, who became a former street child when his parents separated at a tender age and the unbearable hardships endured at the hands of his step-father, he luckily enrolled at Terra in April 2022 to train in Fashion and Design.
Owoli, says He is now able to make both men's and ladies' wear. Out of his skills, he has so far saved 65,000UGX(18.05USD) and hopes to gain more income even before graduating. Through peace education class, Owoli says, he has learned and gained a lot. He confessed that in his former life as a street child, he had no morals & discipline at all and used to have very low self-esteem, but now his life has drastically changed, and has hope for a bright future.
Ocai
Ocai is a formerly abducted child soldier abducted in October 2003 at 14 years and was rescued in April 2017, having spent 15 years in captivity. Ocai is studying Carpentry and joinery. From April 2022 to date he has shown steady progress and passion for his work. He boasts of making quality furniture that has been sold at attractive prices. He came with good motivation to learn and so far, has the ability to produce stools, tables, chairs, beds, and shelves, among others.
Ocai hopes to graduate and become an entrepreneur with a big Carpentry workshop, which will help him to become self-reliant and support his children’s education.
Ajona
Ajona, aged 33, is a former child soldier who was abducted in November 2001 at the age of 12 years, trained as a soldier under the Lord’s Resistance Army Rebels.
Terra Renaissance traced and registered Ajona and is training in Carpentry and Joinery as a course, with Peace Education, Basic Education, and Business Skills as his favorite classes. He is very happy with the skills so far gained in Carpentry, where he has produced mold boxes, chart frames, shelves, tables of all kinds, chairs of various types, and beds, through which he has earned 300,000UGX(83.3USD), which has greatly supported his grandmother back at home.
While in Peace Education class, he affirms that the learnings have helped a lot in his Psychosocial trauma healing and in building his self-esteem.
