St Martins School - Saturday Feeding Program

By Alfred Muheria Aswan | Project Liaison

Greetings from St Martins School and the Kibagare community. It is a New Year and we are glad to have made it this far we hope to make the best out of it. We hope that on your end things are well.

As a school, we have started the year on a high. Schools reopened on the 6th of January and most of our students have reported back. We have admitted 71 new students in their first year of primary school and an additional 50 across the various grades. Our school population now stands at 961 which is indicative of the impact our mission has in this community.

Current Situation

High inflation, poverty, unemployment, early pregnancies, and a high birth rate are still a major concern in this community we serve, and with the lack of a guarantee for meals especially for the children, the need to continue with the school and the Saturday feeding program remains and will always be a priority for us. Reduced rainfalls and extended dry spells have been witnessed in the month ending December 2024 and this has a huge impact on food production and food prices for people living in settlements like Kibagare.

Many people here depend on informal businesses for livelihood ( street Vendors, food kiosks, and casual labor), and with decreased purchasing power many are forced into budget cuts and shifts to be able to live on the cheapest options leading to an increase in food-related diseases, poor diets, and malnutrition in children.

It is on this premise that we feel the need to do the best that we can to continue to do the much we can through the school feeding programs. We have been able to feed the 961 children in school since we reopened on the 6th of January with breakfast and lunch since we resumed their school days.

We have also had two successful Saturday feeding programs, 2889 meals have been served in the last two Saturdays. We will be having another feeding program this weekend where we estimate to feed another 1300 -1500 children.

Your support goes a long way to ensure the guarantee of a meal for the many children who attend our school and also the weekend feeding program and we are more than grateful for your continued support.

Thank you,

Alfred Aswan.
