Saving Children on India's Dangerous Roads

Greeting! I hope to reach you and your loved ones in good health and spirit. Thank you for supporting our project, ‘Safe SURE Walk to School’ initiative in India.

After the successful completion of the project in Peniel School, Bangalore, we were able to replicate a similar idea in Undri Chowk in Pune. Undri intersection consists of two tri-junctions that have high-density residential buildings and educational institutions; which includes a school; in close proximity to these junctions. This intersection is a confluence of National Highway-65 due to which high traffic volume has been observed here.

After studying the data received from concerned government agencies and extensive on-ground research by our team, it was concluded that the increasing moving traffic from the national highway will continue to be a threat to the growing residential population which is in close proximity to the intersection.

Hence the required soft-intervention was carried out at Undri and the following observations were made post the implementation,

1. 48% total reduction in pedestrians' exposure to the road.

2. 176% increase in public realm for pedestrians and vehicle parking.

3. 56% increase in pedestrians who felt the junction is organised and safer.

We are encouraging the concerned government authorities to make these soft-measures permanent creating safe roads for vulnerable road users.

Peniel School in Bangalore, India, one of the schools selected under this project has seen success post intervention creating safe and secure access to education. It was made sure that the intervention is safe, secure, and educational for children before implementing, and was monitored and evaluated for 30 days after implementation. The following key impacts were observed at and around the school zone by the team, in comparison to before the intervention,

1. Students felt safer while crossing the junction to school and they have adequate moving space across the junction.
2. Interactive way-finding and signages guided the users to cross the road safely.
3. It helped motorists to be pre-informed about the school zone ahead and helped in the reduction of vehicular speed near the school.

The results exhibit an overall positive correlation between the user-behavior and the present intervention at the Peniel school.
