BIG DONATION FROM A FORMER BREAD SCHOLAR

A former scholar of BREAD Scholarship program has made a massive donation of Rs. 4 lakh to BREAD Society to set up libraries in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalays (KGBVs) in April 2021. BREAD has awarded a scholarship of Rs. 3,000 per year during the three years from 2006-07 to 2008-09 for his Diploma Course in Engg. He lost his father and an elder sister while he was in school. His mother and younger sister live with him at Hyderabad.

This is an amazing story especially because he is just 29 years of age, unmarried and has yet to fulfill the family obligation of getting his sister married who has competed her graduation. He has to take care of his widowed mother. Such a huge donation came as a very big surprise to all of us at BREAD Society. Hailing from a very poor agriculture family in rural Andhra Pradesh, this speaks volumes for the values he has imbibed. We are reminded of another instance of another gentleman, also from a rural agricultural back ground, who completed his Polytechnic in Engg some thirty odd years ago. He worked for a few years in a private company and started his own set up. Coming to know of BREAD Scholarships program from a business associate, he looked at BREAD Society’s website and gave a massive donation of Rs. 125 lakh in 2007. Yet another instance is that of a private medical practitioner, settled in USA. He has sponsored 506 BREAD Children’s Libraries and is still going strong. These examples speak for the transparency, trustworthiness and integrity of the BREAD Society.

BREAD has setup 183 new libraries during 2020-21. It is the maximum number of libraries set up in a year. The total number of libraries established in the last 12 years is 1,512. Of these, 992 are based on National Means cum Merit Scholarships (NMMS), 200 in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalays (KGBVs) and the remaining 320 are based on donor’s choice.

BREAD has opened a FCRA Account in State Bank of India, Main Branch at New Delhi as per FCRA rules. BREAD Society’s participation in the GlobalGiving Foundation’s programs has come to a standstill with the uncertainty surrounding transfer of contributions to India based voluntary organizations. We look forward to a solution to this problem to be able to actively take part in GlobalGiving activities.

I once again thank the anonymous donor who continues to support us with his monthly recurring donation of $ 25 from the day BREAD Society became a partner of GlobalGiving Foundation.

Resource Mobilization in Covid Time

Daan Utsav 100 Heroes GiveIndia Fundraisers

We thank all our donors who have helped us raise Rs. 4. 68 lakh during Daan Utsav- 100 Heroes campaign. Thanks to them we have received a matching grant of Rs. 1.02 lakh including Gift Backs. We also took part in GiveIndia Fundraisers Challenge 2020 in February-March 2020 and received good support from donors helping us to raise Rs. 3 lakh and a matching grant of Rs. 0.40 lakh. All in all GiveIndia Partners have helped raise an amount of over Rs. 9 lakh in the very difficult year of Covid-19. Of course, major credit goes to our donors who participated in the two fundraising campaigns. We are eagerly looking forward to receiving over $ 6,000 from GlobalGiving Foundation as approval of Govt. of India is said to be in its final stage.

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalays (KGBVs)

We have established 123 BREAD Children’s Libraries in KGBVs, girls residential schools set up in backward Mandals with poor women’s literacy for dropouts, orphans, single parent and indigent girls. In the month of February 2021, we are setting up 72 more libraries in KGBVs adding up to 195 in one and half years. Total number of libraries set up in the last 12 years will be 1,504 by the end of February 2021.

Monitoring of BREAD Children’s Libraries

We have started monitoring the performance of our libraries by canvassing a questionnaire by making telephone calls and requesting Head Masters and Library Teachers to read Karadeepika, a handbook of guidance for operating our libraries and sending us lists of Voluntary Student Librarians (VSLs) who manage the libraries by lending books to classmates to take home, read and return. This survey of obtaining information from over 1,500 schools is expected to be completed by June-July 2021. We propose to award Certificates of volunteerism to VSLs to be countersigned by Head Masters of library schools.

DaanUtsav 100 Heroes GiveIndia Fundraisers

We are taking active part in “Daan Utsav 100 Heroes” resource mobilization campaign of GiveIndia Fundraisers which started on 2^nd October 2020 and will close on 20^th November (IST). GiveIndia is also offering matching grants though not as attractive as GlobalGiving’s matching grants. BREAD has received about $ 4,000 in the first week and will receive 20% matching grant. BREAD thanks its donors for the support it has received. Much as it would like to, it is unable to participate in GlobalGivings resource mobilization campaigns due to the uncertainity about receiving donations. It is missing out on so many GlobalGiving donors who used to support through GlobalGiving and is mentioning the link because it would like them to support with their donations.The link is:

BREAD has yet to receive your donations and GlobalGiving Foundation’s matching grants of over $6,000 as Govt. of India has not given permission. BREAD has dug deep to fulfill all its commitments to its donors.

BREAD Society has set up 65 new libraries in the last three months. It has also distributed 40 new books to 1,329 libraries established till 31^st March 2020. In addition, it has published 5,000 copies of a Handbook for the guidance of Headmasters and library teachers to operate the libraries adopting the system developed by it. It has distributed three copies each of this book to the 1,394 library schools along with 40 books, one for headmaster, one for library teacher and the other for the library. Sometimes when headmasters or library teachers get transferred their successors are not aware of the system to operate BREAD libraries through Voluntary Student Librarians. This Handbook in vernacular will be on hand to the new headmasters and library teachers to understand and follow the guidelines.

Ever since the decision was taken by Governing Body of BREAD Society to set up libraries in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) last year, BREAD has set up 91 libraries in KGBVs which are residential girls schools for orphans, dropouts, single parent and poor girls.
