Progress Report of BREAD Libraries

BREAD has established 148 new libraries in 2021-22 adding up to a total of 1,660 libraries in 13 years. It has also replenished its existing libraries with 50 new books in 2021-22.

BREAD is glad to inform all its donors that GlobalGiving Foundation has spared no effort to get the clearance from FCRA division of Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India to get the permission to disburse funds to Indian Partners. As an alternative, GlobalGiving Foundation has suggested that Indian Partners may try to find financial sponsors based in USA through whom it could transfer donations. BREAD identified a financial sponsor. After due process, GlobalGiving has transferred $7415.15 to it on 25^th December 2021. BREAD has received the backlog of all donations made from May 2019 to November 2021 in January 2022.

BREAD has ensured that the delay in funds reaching us does not affect the establishment of the libraries or the replenishment of books in these libraries. This we did by drawing on reserves with special permission of the board of BREAD.

BREAD is keenly looking forward to the next few months as the schools have re-opened and there are various initiatives and efforts of the Government to re-invigorate reading habits. The Government has initiated a programme called “100 days of reading”, where the students are issued books to take home and read. We have observed a renewed interest in BREAD library’s with more schools asking for library’s and books. We hope to continue to make a difference in these efforts to provide every child with access to books to read.

DAAN UTSAV 2021: Transfer of donations to Indian partners from GlobalGiving has remained unresolved. Otherwise, GolbalGiving matching grants have been the most attractive. Please donate during DAAN UTSAV 2021 from 2nd Oct. 2021 to 21st Nov. 2021, especially in the first week from 2nd October to 8th October 2021 using the following link:

Even Small donations during resource mobilization drives add up to significant amounts helping us to replenish existing libraries with more books. These small donations have assumed importance in view of the steep fall in interest rates in India. Adding new books to existing BREAD libraries make them vibrant, dynamic and enthuse the children eagerly looking forward to read new books.

BREAKING NEWS: A former BREAD Scholar wants to donate Rs. 1 lakh to BREAD. She got BREAD scholarship of Rs. 13,000 over a five year perid to pursue college education after high school. She is unmarried, father an unskilled worker, supported her brother's education though yet not settled and is supporting her sister's education which will be completed this year. Yet she chose to donate to BREAD. This story is similar to that of another former BREAD Scholar who made a donation of Rs. 4 lakh in April in spite of onerous family responsibilities.

And we will hear more such stories from former BREAD Scholars in the near future as we counseled them to look after their families first after securing a job and think of BREAD only after about 15 years by which time they would have completed their family responsibilities.

We believe we will hear similar stories from students of BREAD Libraries in 15-20 years.

NEW LIBRARIES: We have established 22 new libraries during the current year. We will establish 63 more libraries by Nov. 2021. In December 2021, all existing BREAD libraries will be replenished with 50 new books.

FCRA: BREAD Society has filed the Annual FCRA Return for the year 2020-21. It has also filed the application for renewal of FCRA registration beyond 31^st October 2021.

Annual General Body Meeting was held on 31st July 2021. It approved the Secretary’s Report of the activities during 2020-21, adopted the Audited Accounts of the year 2020-21, approved the proposed activities for the year 2021-22, approved the Budget for the year 2021-22 and appointed Mr. P Mohana Rao & Co as Auditors for the financial year 2021-22.

CSR Registration: BREAD is registered with Ministry of Corporate Affairs as an entity eligible for CSR grants.
