A Scholarship for A Child To Go To School in Afric

The facilities are very basic here at the Mmakadi Creche in rural Limpopo, South Africa and it is our goal to improve the infrastructure and recourses. We believe that giving children a safe, fun and stimulating environment is important. The construction of the jungle gym in the playground of the crèche does just that. It offers a fun and safe environment for the children to play in. 

When GVI first started working with the Mmakadi Creche there were no nice areas for the children to play in and no equipment or toys to stimulate them. The jungle gym is going to be a big improvement, providing the children with a safe and fun environment to play in. It will stimulate them to play physically and gain strength and coordination and will also stimulate social interaction in a different setting and with their peers.

Another positive impact is that the jungle gym will make the crèche a much more popular destination for children. We hope that this will inadvertently promote the crèche in the local community, which is a local service provided by local women.

The crèche is an important haven for the children because most mothers in the community have to go out to work. The crèche provides a safe place for the children during the day, and somewhere that they can begin the early stages of learning.

Dear Supporter,

Earlier this year, after completing our construction project at the creche, the team decided to bring the children to our Limpopo base and let them experience first-hand the beautiful and majestic animals that live nearby.

For many of the children, it was their first ever game drive and there were lots of smiles and giggles when they started spotting all the different animals on the Karongwe Game Reserve. By bringing the children along on the drive, we hope to inspire them to love and respect the awesome wildlife in their country.

This outing is part of our continuous Outreach Environmental Education project we have running in the local community. Limpopo has a large area of South Africa's natural resources, yet it is known to be the poorest, least educated area of the country. According to the NDA, in 2010 the unemployment rate was estimated at 26.8%. Around 60% of people live below the poverty line (UN definition: less than $1.25/day). It is no surprise that, in terms of rhino poaching activity, Limpopo has been amongst the third highest province in the country for the past 3 years. Education is best strategy to tackle these issues. 

Through our environmental projects and outings with the local community, we aim to teach the children why animals are important to the economy, the environment and why they need to help protect their precious natural heritage.
