Raising Environmental Awareness for the Next Generation

By Leah Brown | Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

What a productive start we have had to kick off 2019!

As part of a year long project, we continually teach environmental education to Grade 7 children in our local community, the Oaks. Our new Community Officer, Charmaine, is fitting into her new role very well and the children are loving her! Big plans are in the works for the remainder of the year and we are excited to share them with you.

Our current Grade 7 class at Diphuti Primary School is 100 students strong and their eagerness to learn is inspiring. During each community visit we teach about mammals, birds, trees, pollution, etc. and follow up with a hands-on activity to get them involved. Hands-on activities are crucial for absorption of what we have taught them and we recently got down and dirty and planted a vegetable garden which they tend to daily. Next on the list is a litter picking adventure to send the pollution message close to home and teach them how easy it is to make a difference in their community.

Acorns to Oaks High School is also full of students eager to learn and thanks to our generous supporters we were able to visit them and educate them on some of the current environmental issues. We taught them small things they can do in their daily lives to help contribute to a healthy environment. Our goal is to continue to branch out further to other schools in the area to help educate more of the next generation.

With your gracious help, the funding for these projects helps to cover fuel costs to give us the opportunity to travel to other local schools to spread our conservation message further. Keep following our story for more updates on projects soon to come.

Thank you for your continued support!
