Learning Center to benefit 500 in Central Mexico

We all hoped that with the end of last year, it would be the end of the worst of Covid! The children in San Miguel Viejo  prepared to return to regular school classes in person and then the new strain of the virus hit. The children have returned only two (2) days a week to their formal classes. Continuing with precaution Ojala Ninos collected 76 back packs for the children, each with very basic supplies and socks! This brought many smiles and much appreciation from the parents. 

We have managed to provide weekly tutoring to the kids in first grade through 9th grade, here in Mexico that is the completion of Secundaria. This is a tremendous help as many in the community do not have internet access and miss their virtual classes.

We also offer English classes and continue distributing at home activity kits using only recycled materials with a social justice or environmental awareness theme when possible. Sometimes its something just for fun!

Every Wednesday when the kids come through for their activity kit, we give them lunch. On the other days after the small workshops we are allowed to facilitate, they also receive a snack.

We continue to take temperatures and face masks are obligatory. We are working on the lot now with open air class rooms in mind. Uncertain times are still ahead yet we are moving forward, being more creative in our ways to offer opportunities to the children of San Miguel Viejo.

In August of this year we were able to reopen our doors and offer some of our regular workshops as well as add some new opportunities. We continue to work in small groups outside, requiring facemasks, monitoring temperature etc. 

We have volunteers teaching English to two seperate age groups and twice a week we have two volunteers who are tutoring our Primary school age kids and our Secundary age kids. This is something that we knew we would need to do, but could not have imagined just how necessary and succesful it would be.

We have always had a dance and movement class however now, we have a young volunteer from the United States sharing her talent to the girls in ballet once a week.  What's the saying? Open your doors and they will come. We did and they have!

It is with continued donations from our generous supporters and the many volunteers we appreciate so much, that we have successfully reopened!

We have reinforced the structural and security wall and are excited to show off Ojala and San Miguel Viejos new mural! The children brainstormed four main ideas that they wanted to represent.They are;

The Capilla built in 1542 in the community of San Miguel Viejo. The traditional Indios Conqusitas (Apache Dancers). Corn, a staple of the indigenous and modern day Mexican. Our beautiful Parroquia in San Miguel Allende. (San Miguel Grande) We have the heart of Mexico in the middle, as we are geographically located in El Corazon de Mexico! We worked with another local non profit organization who supports street muralists to help guide our kids and the staff!
