Road to Reopening

By Betty Lopez | Project Leader

Greetings

Although Ojala Ninos Mission is to be a model for extra-curricular education in rural communities in Mexico for children of all ages, when the Corona Virus Pandemic hit, we were deemed non- essential and had to close our doors. We also had to come up with a plan quickly. We had to physically distance yet how could we  Social distance and still remain in contact with the community, especially the children we serve?

Our Board members and some staff/volunteers were able to conduct virtual meetings but this was not possible for community members of San Miguel Viejo.

Flyers, posters and information about the symptoms and prevention of the Virus were distributed immediately. We gifted facemasks and showed the families how to make their own.

Our director organized food distributions amongst the hardest hit. This is not our mission however it was something we could do that would help and enable us to remain in contact. The bags contained rice, beans, lentils, oil, dried milk and on one occasion we had a local farm donate fresh vegetables and eggs.

Staff and volunteers put together activity kits that our kids could work on at home and we loaned some books (long term) to encourage them to continue reading.

We also continue to just walk through the community and check on the families and children. Let them know they are not forgotten.

Upon getting a green light to reopen  we will occupy the Founders house. We are using this opportunity to improve our classes and even create new ones. We are reimagining our work space. Size and layout with open floor plan, keeping in mind the safety of the children, as well as staff, volunteers and visitors.

This has been a hard year around the world, everyone has to rethink what is and what will be a new normal. I hope when you can you will continue to support Ojala Ninos and the many wonderful organizations that GlobalGiving supports.

Little Things Matter....a lot!

Please be safe, be kind, be well.

Saludos

Betty Lopez
