FWA JULY 2021 Narrative Report

“My name is Leilla. I grew up in a family where my parents were always quarrelling. I was born in Sororezo, Bujumbura province. When I was 15 years old, my mother left my father because she was beaten almost every day. It was since that time that I started to do the work my mother was doing (working in fields, feeding my brothers and sisters) so that my brothers and sisters can survive. I then decided to join my mother. My father came to pick me by force, but he didn’t find me because I was staying at my cousin home in Musaga, Bujumbura Mairie. Some months later, my little brother left my parents ‘house to find a job in Bujumbura Mairie. Finally, my whole family was killed when President Ndadaye was assassinated on October 21^st, 1993. They were burnt in our house. When I learned about the sad news, I felt so sorrowful that I wanted to commit suicide. Then, I was told that my brother who was here in Bujumbura Mairie was brought to Rwanda and died there. I didn’t get a chance to attend his burial ceremony. Even today, I don’t want people speaking about both Sororezo and Rwanda. Thanks a lot for organizing this workshop so that I can share my sad stories.”

FWA MAY 2021 NARRATIVE REPORT

“My name is Aline. I was living a very difficult life. I was always asking for money from my husband in order to feed my children. He often gave me his money with insults telling me that I’m nothing. The, I decided to ask for a small loan of BIF120, 000 from our SHG. When they gave me the money, I started as mall restaurant. There I prepare rice, cassava leaves, meat beans and other. My daily benefit is between BIF12, 000 and BIF20,000. Every week, I’m able to pay back a small part of the loan I received. Our SHG has done very good things to me. I will never leave them”.

“My name is Jacqueline. I have three daughters. They are 17, 15 and 13 years old. When I heard that we have sessions on sexual and reproductive health (SRH), I invited all of them to be part of the SHGs so that they can benefit from the training sessions. Indeed, we mothers are often afraid to discuss with our daughters about SRH. I brought them so that they cannot have unwanted pregnancies. I would invite other mothers to encourage their daughters at Ntaseka clinic.”

“My mother was a sex worker. We were 6 children from different fathers. My father refused that I am his child and my mother threw us where she wants.She got married and took me with her because I was the smallest child. In their married life, there was no peace it was always quarrel. One day they threw hot coals on me. I wished to be dead.

One day I decide to leave mom because I have seen enough. I took refuge in Bujumbura to look for a job. I worked as a housekeeper; I became beautiful and the boys started flirting with me. This is how I had a child and his father refused to know him as his son because I and the man were from two different ethnic groups.

After this rejection then my life was to go from one house to another. One day I found a house that is under construction and I lived there. I got to know a man who married me but he had another wife. I suffered all kinds of violence; He was beating me for no reason. When he got home he was using his fingers in my sex to check that I had sex with another man. When he found it was very wet, he hit me. He put me under the chair, to beat me. It was so hard. He always told me that he will kill me. To this, it was added my sterility problem. I could not have a child with him; he always insults me because of that. After 6 years this man left me and I started my own life from zero. Now, live in peace although I still have financial issues”

FWA APRIL 2021 NARRATIVE REPORT

“I got married to a man who ended up marrying another woman and he rejected me with my child. I was in village; I depended on the agriculture of my husband's fields. This means that I did not have where to go and decide go back to my family.

In the Burundian tradition when you return to your family you are the shame of the family their call you “IGISUBIRAMUHIRA” meaning that you are something which returns back home. My mother told me that it is my fault: a real Burundian woman must tolerate all kinds of violence in her marriage. I thought that I supported my husband with all my strength and besides that it was he who chased me away. Then, I decided to suffer in my own family: my mother insulted me day and night and my brothers beat me and they told me that I am an incapable woman , that I came back to share their fields.

I saw that I have no future and I decided to leave my family's house without saying goodbye. I came here in Bujumbura looking for a job. I left my child with my mother; I told to myself that my mother will not mistreat my child. I work as a maid.

As s in my head was this idea that I am incapable. I had the feeling to try marriage again so that I can be accepted in my family. That’s how I married a flattering man. Arrived in his house I found that he was living in a small room with another man. We used all three to sleep on one a mattress; you cannot imagine the scenario.

He was beating, me insulting me and one day he stabbed me in the head. I bled so much that my neighbors forced him to take me to the hospital and the police jailed him.From that day he told me that he will do a bad thing to me that I'll remember all my life.

Until now I live this life it has not changed and I have to endure this to save the honor of my family. I will never divorce again”. I appreciate being here to meet people who have similar problems. I feel I'm not alone.
